From the beginnings of days when we needed a force much stronger than ourselves, we have depended on the strength and smarts of the horse.
They have carried us across the lands to find a place to call our own. Their muscles cleared plots for our houses, plowed the ground to grow our gardens to feed our families and pulled carriages and buggies as our transport.
The horse has been, at many times, viewed generally as a tool but, when I am honored enough to stand next to this creation of God, I see so much more. The eyes hold a pool of information on how they feel, what they fear, how they hurt or when they're at peace.
I know each heart finds joy, knows sorrow, needs trust and aches for compassion.
Too many times I have watched a heavy hand of an owner beating a frightened horse in order to make them bend to their will and this in turn destroys trust.
I've seen many an owner drive by a hungry horse as they rush into dinner to delight themselves in another needed meal as the horse withers away at the cruelty of starvation.
I've seen bodies lie on the ground as they've taken their last breath when help came too late. Death by dehydration is one of the most painful deaths and when something as simple as water was needed.
Overgrown hooves have been a factor of crippling a horse as the act of standing alone was agony but, the only other choice was to lay down and pass away.
Injuries that could have been cared for by a veterinarian were left to become infected, left broken and far too gone to salvage.
Owning a horse is not a right, it is an honor. They do not have a language we can comprehend unless we understand they feel as we do; Unless we listen with our hearts.
They've carried us into many a battle, hauled in equipment and medications to a needed man down and, at the end of a long day carried us home.
So very many are sent to a cruel end because a human decided they were no longer worth the time; although they were care taker of work and children.
Slaughter is alive, well and thriving even when deemed illegal. Truck loads of young, old and in between have no idea what awaits them or why they were sent away. Many line their pockets through selling horses by the pound for consumption.
It's due time to step up and step in to help those who have no voice to be heard.
Since the year 2012 Whippoorwill Horse Rescue has taken in many of those who fell so quickly in the wrong hands. All that is possible is done through donations and volunteers.
Many have found amazing homes and those who grew past the age of riding or those who require special needs remain here to live out their days in safety and love.
Your donations are tax deductible. Loving homes are always needed. Your prayers are always appreciated.
Please, help us help them. Our mission is giving another chance to save those in need.
Our amazing team of regulars and part-time volunteers are committed to helping others. We take our convictions and turn them into action. Think you would be a good fit? Get in touch for more information!
Seeing a need for energetic, nonprofit work in this area, we formed our organization to provide safe place for horses and donkeys to land. We've consistently grown since then, all thanks to the helping hands of this amazing community!
Since we officially became a non profit 501 C 3 organisation in 2012, we have brought in the forgotten, abused, neglected and slaughter bound horse. Some have stayed with us throughout the years and become sanctuary while others were rehabilitated and adopted out to forever homes. We believe in second chances.
